Important Reminder for Jefferson Property Owners Regarding Sidewalk Maintenance
Did you receive a sidewalk repair notice recently? Here is a quick overview of how the process works in the City of Jefferson:
- Property Owner Responsibility: Per local municipal ordinance, adjacent property owners in Jefferson are responsible for the maintenance and repair of sidewalks next to their property.
- Annual Reviews: To keep our community safe, the City inspects approximately 15% of all sidewalks each year—including city-maintained areas—to identify any trip hazards.
- Contractor Services: The City partners with a contracted entity to perform these inspections and some repairs. The City’s contractor performs saw cutting to remove the trip hazard if full replacement isn’t necessary to reduce costs. Replacements are done by the City’s DPW.
- The Process: After an inspection, the City reviews the inspection reports; property owners are notified with an estimated cost for needed repairs or replacement. You may choose to hire your own private contractor or have the City complete the work.
Billing & Payment Details: If the City handles your repair, you will receive an invoice shortly after completion for the exact actual cost of the work. You can pay the invoice directly upon receipt. Any unpaid balances after October 1st will be placed on the annual tax roll as a special charge.
(Note: 2025 was the pilot year for our contractual inspection service. If you received work in 2025, your initial estimates may have varied slightly from your final invoice, as owners are only billed for the precise final cost of replacement.)
